Common Questions

Answers to help you decide.

Whether you're considering an advocate for yourself or a loved one, here are the questions we hear most often.

What is a patient advocate, exactly?
A patient advocate works on your behalf to help you understand your healthcare options, communicate effectively with providers, and make informed decisions about your care. Think of us as a knowledgeable, experienced guide whose only job is to help you and your family navigate the healthcare system with clarity and confidence.
How is an independent advocate different from a hospital advocate?
An independent patient advocate works only for you — never for a hospital, insurance company, or provider group. Hospital-employed advocates do important work, but their employer has other priorities. The difference is allegiance: my job is to look out for your best interests alone.
Who benefits most from working with an advocate?
Anyone who feels confused, overwhelmed, or unheard in the healthcare system. We commonly work with: aging adults managing multiple providers, adult children helping parents from a distance, patients with complex or new diagnoses, families coordinating care after a hospital stay, and anyone who simply wants a knowledgeable second set of eyes and ears.
Does insurance cover patient advocacy services?
Most health insurance plans do not currently cover services from independent patient advocates, so clients typically pay out of pocket. The good news: many of our clients find that advocacy actually saves them money — by preventing duplicate tests, catching billing errors, and avoiding unnecessary procedures. We're transparent about pricing and will discuss costs with you upfront.
Do you replace my doctor?
Absolutely not. We work alongside your healthcare team — not in place of it. We don't diagnose, prescribe, or make medical decisions. What we do is help you communicate with your providers, understand what they're telling you, and make informed decisions about your own care.
What areas do you serve?
We're based in Chandler, AZ and primarily serve the East Valley — Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Sun Lakes, Queen Creek, Tempe, and Ahwatukee — as well as the broader Phoenix metro. Many services can also be provided virtually for clients located outside our immediate area.
How does the process work?
We start with a complimentary initial conversation to understand your situation and answer your questions. If we're a good fit, we'll schedule an initial assessment, gather any forms and records, and develop a plan that fits your specific needs. From there, we work as little or as much as you need — there's no long-term commitment.
Is everything we discuss confidential?
Yes. All client information is kept strictly confidential and is not shared with anyone outside Healthcare Journey Advocates without your explicit permission. You can read more in our privacy policy.
How do I get started?
